The Wake Campus Basic Needs Center (BNC) is a centralized hub that helps you navigate challenges you may be facing. We strive to build awareness about food insecurity, healthy nutrition, CalFresh, and other resources in a dignified and helpful environment.

The Santa Barbara City College Noncredit Basic Needs Center is excited to partner with TBH: a virtual one-stop-shop for all your basic needs!  Through TBH, students can immediately identify critical benefits they are eligible for (e.g., CalFresh, CalWorks, etc.), get live case support from a TBH virtual Care Navigator, apply for benefits, and connect with community resources and an SBCC Basic Needs Care Navigator for in-person meetings.  Support services are available around the clock 🕑, from the comfort of your mobile device 📱, 365 days a year 🗓️. No wait times or waitlists.

Location

Visit the Noncredit Basic Needs Center at 300 N Turnpike Rd, Room 22

All it takes is a few simple steps:
1. Visit basic-needs.info/SBCC
2. Log in using your usual SBCC username and password
3. Complete a short benefit questionnaire (it usually takes less than 10 minutes)
4. A virtual Care Navigator will contact the student to schedule a meeting based on their availability

Basic Needs Services Available:

  • Food Pantry: The hours for this upcoming week are listed below
  • Emergency Aid: Up to $500 (eligibility requirements apply)
  • Emergency Bus Pass: One per semester (eligibility requirements apply)
  • CalFresh sign-up assistance
  • Referrals to Cliff Campus resources and other community agencies

Food Pantry Hours: October 1st - October 4th

  • Tuesday, October 1st: 11am - 1pm
  • Wednesday, October 2nd: 9:00am - 3:00pm and 4:00pm - 7:00pm
  • Thursday, October 3rd: 9:00am - 12:30pm
  • Friday, October 4th: 1:30pm - 4:00pm

To ensure equitable distribution of emergency funds, students may only receive an emergency award once per academic year. All applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis. 

Emergency Aid awards are generally unnder $500 and based on demonstrated need and availability of funds.

Please note, emergency fund requests may be denied, partially funded, or fully funded.

The amount awarded is determined by the committee based on documentation provided in the application. Students may apply multiple times, but will only be awarded up to a maximum of $500 per year. 

All applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. 

Applicants must meet all of the following:

  • Currently enrolled at SBCC taking at least 2 noncredit courses
  • Enrolled in at least one noncredit course in a previous semester
  • Is seeking a degree, certificate, or transfer
  • Is in good disciplinary standing at the College (not on probation or suspension)
  • Provides detailed supporting documentation (receipts, invoices, professional estimates, etc.)

Alternative resources may be explored for those not eligible based on above criteria. 

Unexpected emergencies covered by the Emergency Fund include:

  • Emergency housing support 
  • Emergency automotive repairs
  • Unexpected expenses related to learning (books, technology, etc., that were not expected)
  • DACA renewal fees that are outside of the student budget
  • Emergency medical/dental/vision expenses
  • Severe illness or hospitalization
  • Sudden, recent loss of fixed income

Costs not covered by the emergency fund:

  • Fees for other colleges
  • Fees for parking tickets, moving violations, traffic school, or expenses related to violation of regulations/law
  • Planned Expenses*:
    • Monthly rental assistance or mortgages
    • Car payments
    • General credit card debt 
    • Utilities - gas, phone, electric, water/trash
    • Ongoing/chronic medical expenses
    • Non-resident tuition 

*Requests for the above will only be considered if payments could not be made due to unforeseen/unexpected urgent and/or catastrophic events which has caused a redirection of resources.

You will NOT need to pay back any emergency funds provided by the Basic Needs Center.

Receiving an Emergency Funds Grant may have an impact on other financial aid awards. If you have questions regarding the potential financial aid impact of receiving such an award please contact the Financial Aid office.

Due to the high volume of requests, please allow for 1-2 weeks from the time of your request to receive funds if approved.
